“Would you like to hear a story?” That was the opening line our Irish priest, Father Kelly, always used to begin his weekly message at our church services in Dillingham, Alaska.
I moved to Alaska from Prairie du Chien more than 40 years ago and thought that when I left there, I would never find any place to equal the beauty of the Mississippi valley.
However, I found one that came very close when I discovered Bristol Bay. Sadly, very few people are aware that that region is now threatened by the proposed Pebble Mine, a massive open-pit copper mine that could destroy this pristine and very productive area.
It’s likely that the EPA will ultimately decide under the Clean Water Act whether this project will be allowed. That decision is expected to occur in the next few months, so contact your legislators and the EPA before it is too late and the permits have been approved.
