An unidentified buyer bought an 1853 oil painting of a Fairhaven whaling barque by renowned marine artist William Bradford for $248,000 Sunday at an art auction in Boston.
The 24-by-36-inch painting of the Speedwell, which is still in its original frame, shows the whaler passing Gay Head. It was commissioned in 1853, the year of its launch.
"It sold very well. That's a great price for an early work by Bradford," said Chris Barber, a specialist in the Americana Department with Skinner's Auctioneers and Appraisers of Antiques and Fine Art, Boston.
